U.S. Degree Curriculum –Foundation for Accurate Credential Evaluation.

  1. Understanding U.S. Curriculum Requirements:
    • Credential evaluators must have a comprehensive understanding of the U.S. curriculum requirements for all academic degrees. This knowledge is crucial for accurately comparing and equating foreign education to the U.S. education system. Evaluators should be familiar with the structure, content, and expectations of U.S. degree programs.
  2. Distinguishing Credential Evaluation from English Translation Reports:
    • Evaluators should not merely translate foreign courses into English and mirror the foreign transcript of records. The correct evaluation report must identify and map the different Areas of Study required for a particular U.S. degree curriculum. This analysis ensures that the foreign education meets the specific requirements of the U.S. academic system.
  3. Areas of Study Requirements of the U.S. Degree Curriculum: * Areas of Study should be thoroughly evaluated and presented in the evaluation report.
    1. Natural, Physical, and Biological Sciences:
      • Evaluators should assess whether the applicant's education includes the necessary coursework in these sciences as per the U.S. curriculum requirements.
    2. Social Sciences:
      • Courses in disciplines such as Sociology, Psychology, Political Science, and Economics should be reviewed to ensure they meet U.S. standards.
    3. Humanities:
      • The inclusion of humanities courses, such as English/Foreign Language, Literature, History, Philosophy, and Liberal Arts, should be evaluated.
    4. Mathematics:
      • The mathematical component of the applicant's education must be analyzed to ensure it aligns with the required level for the relevant U.S. degree.
    5. Major Field of Specialization:
      • The specific courses and credit requirements in the applicant's major field of study should be examined to determine equivalence to U.S. degree programs.
    6. Electives:
      • Evaluators should consider the electives taken by the applicant and how they contribute to the total credit requirement of the curriculum.
    7. Lower and Higher Division Course Requirements:
      • The evaluation should distinguish between lower division (introductory level) and higher division (advanced level) courses and verify that the applicant has completed the required progression through these levels.
    8. Prerequisite Courses:
      • An analysis should be conducted to ensure that the applicant completed the necessary prerequisite courses before advancing to higher-level courses. This step is crucial for maintaining the integrity and rigor of the U.S. academic system.
  4. Verification of Accreditation:
    • The U.S. evaluation service must verify that the foreign institution is accredited by its own Ministry of Education or an equivalent education agency. This step ensures that the institution from which the applicant obtained their credentials is recognized and operates within the education framework of its home country. This verification often involves checking official lists or databases maintained by the respective government education authorities. All institutions in foreign countries submit annual reports of graduates to the appropriate education agencies.
  5. Authenticity of Documents:
    • It is essential to verify the authenticity of the documents submitted by the applicant. This process typically involves direct communication with the issuing institution to confirm that the documents are legitimate and have not been altered. Methods can include official letters or emails to the institution or utilizing secure verification systems if available.
  6. Confirmation of Degree:
    • The degree obtained by the applicant must be confirmed through the country’s Bureau of Private Schools or an equivalent agency. If the name of the candidate and the degree appear in their database, this confirmation can often be completed through emails or online verification systems provided by these agencies.

By following these guidelines, credential evaluators can ensure that their evaluations are thorough, accurate, and reflective of the true academic value of the applicant's education. This rigorous approach helps maintain the high standards of U.S. education and ensures that foreign-educated individuals are adequately prepared to meet the expectations of U.S. academic and professional environments.
